Update 14 - The Mad Cephalon brought about many changes to the interface, urging me to write a whole new post on how to invite friends. Below will be a guide (with pictures!) on how to invite friends, and how to leave the group.

The bridge of your ship - where you start all this friend business
Add friend to squad
Go to the bridge, then select the Navigation console
Check top left corner for the big plus button
Once you click it, you'll see the name lists. Choose from your friends, your clan, the people who recently got randomly tagged in your party, or just someone you happen to have the name of.
Click someone would put their name in the text box. Press "Invite".
There we have it!
Leave a team
To leave a team, look again at top left, press the menu sign.
This is the same menu that you get when you press the "Esc" key.
Hover on your profile, then press "Leave squad". You're all alone again now, Tenno.
